The Happiest Place on Earth

When Baby Susan was about four (about the age of the doppelganger Baby Susan in the previous post), Danny got an opportunity to attend a meeting, training, or something or another in Anaheim, California. Now, as most of you know, Anaheim is the home for The Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland.

I had grown up in Kentucky watching The Wonderful World of Disney on television every Sunday evening.

As this program was another leader in early product placement (see Romper Room Part Deux post) I had always wanted, no desired, nay had an obsession with going to Disneyland.  As any student of United States geography knows Kentucky is a LONG way from California, especially in ye olden days before all the interstates and superhighways that exist today.  So, alas, my dream went unfilled.

Until the federal government decided to send Danny to Anaheim.

We took off the places were dreams come true.  For Susan, this seemed to water and ducks.

Yes we are at The Happiest Place on Earth and Baby Susan is feeding ducks.

In fairness, she did enjoy Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and we did get a picture at Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.

If you look carefully at the left side of this picture you can see me in a red top next to the purple and gold regal looking banners.

And how predictable is it that this was coming after a day of fun.

How cute is she in her Disneyland sweatshirt and Minnie hat?  And the crying jag she is on is strictly from be tired beyond belief.  So guess what comes next?

Utter collapse.
And one tired but happy little girl.

Epilogue-The doll dressed in red next to Baby Susan in the bed is Baby Beans.  Baby Beans went EVERYWHERE with us for years.  Baby Susan loved Baby Beans almost into extinction.  Grannygrunt gave Baby Susan a replacement Baby Beans but the original still lives at my house.  It is very special to me.

  1. Now for the rest of the story….

Susan was four and really did not know what Disney was all about. Pam, on the other hand was 26 and knew very well what Disney was all about.

I played a late softball game on Thursday night and when I got hom...e at 11pm, Pam had the bags packed and by the door. She said, “Get a shower; we are leaving in 15 minutes”. It’s a 14 hour drive!!!! Then, Susan woke up about midnight and looked out the front window and declared “How come I don’t see Disneyland?” Well, we were still in New Mexico.

At about 2pm the next day, we arrived in Anaheim – exhausted and haggard. After a well deserved night in an actual bed, we went to Disneyland – to the happiness of two little girls.

    Dear old Dad
